Being your own fairy godmother

For most of my life I had been waiting.

I had been waiting for things to happen so that I can have the things I want. When my daughter is rich, when I marry a millionaire… Seriously! I laugh now but  some how I had learnt that to have things I want I have to wait for external things to happen and judging by the number of people who do the lottery I suspect I’m not alone in that. Which probably means there are a huge number of  people out there who may never get to act on their dreams.

Maybe it was being raised in a household where there was always more week than money and thinking that the lovely things are beyond our reach, or maybe it’s about being raised  as a woman who learnt we can’t spend money on ourselves.  Who knows. But more importantly I have now learnt that I can be my own fairy god mother and I can bring the things into my life that I want.

But, to mis-quote the Spice Girls, what did I want, what did I really really want?

Being raised in hand-me-downs I actually didn’t know what I wanted and often just went with what I was given, or what was popular, which is of course how fashions work – we just choose what others have chosen.   I started to learn what I didn’t want but how could I find out what I desired?

Then 5 years ago I discovered vision boards. People use vision boards differently but for me they became  a way  of bypassing my head and my training and tuning into what I loved by noticing how I responded to images.  This highly unpolished video below shows you how I create and use vision boards.

As a result of creating vision boards for myself and having the images in front of me every day I am now ticking off so many of the things that I didn’t know I could do, or have, or thought I could never afford. I have bought my longed for camper van, been to Iceland and sat in the Blue Lagoon, been paragliding, written The Heart of Sales, set up The Growing Club as a social enterprise and become a speaker.

It took a while, but I now know that I can be my own fairy god mother and go after the things I want. I no longer have to sit and hope someone else will make it happen for me. I can grow my own garden. And that is exciting.

What is it you would like to achieve this year?
