Responding to recommendation requests on LinkedIn – demystified

A little while ago LinkedIn changed the way they send recommendation requests and I’m aware that people are getting in a pickle. So this post is a simple step by step guide to the process of responding to a recommendation request.

Step 1.

If someone asks you to recommend them you will get a notification in your inbox. This is what you will see…

Many people write a reply but for it to appear on LinkedIn you have to click the link under the name in the message .

Step 2.

That link will take you to this screen where you click on write a recommendation (If you don’t know them or don’t want to write a recommendation you can click ignore ).

Step 3.

You then get taken to this form

Where you write your recommendation in the box at the top.

Step 4.

Once you have written it and sent it off it appears in the persons inbox for them to read before they add it to their profile. They have an option of  asking you to make some changes, but so far I have never had anyone do that.

And that folks is all there is to it!

It’s great to write recommendations for people who have done a good job for you. In fact why wait for them to ask, you could just write one anyway. And this is how you do that…

Visit their profile click the drop down arrow next to Send a message. Then click recommend and follow the steps offered. Remember that you can only recommend people you are connected to, so you may have to send a connection request first.

Go on, spread the happy and make someone’s day!
